It took me a week to find why my other was consuming my HD. I didn't put a guide on this topic because I don't want people copying and pasting commands like maniacs :) But this is accounted for on any disk space utility.

IF you have a desktop, or a laptop that is always plugged to the network, you can disable Local Backups Snapshots, this will free some space. It found Wrong Block counts, and 'freed' 400Gb for me. Boot into recovery utility, disk utility, First Aid on the Volume with problem. It's an error on free blocks count, which then generate wrong free/used space.

The only way I found how to do it, it to boot into repair, terminal and deleted it thenДЄfter I did all of above/below, I still had 400Gb unaccounted for. Something changed on El Cap, you can't just delete. So find the location by running omnidisk from terminal like above, then run : mv /path to./.ash / Then from finder on the root of the disk you can delete that folder In some instances that can be buggy (like when you replace the time machine disk and copy the old time machine files to it), like it was in my case. Time machine old files bug: if your time machine runs out of space, osx will backup locally, then when that space is available it will dump to it and delete that local backup. It will take maybe hours to fully rebuild the index This will erase the spotlight index and recreate it. Spotlight index corrupted: system preferences, spotlight, privacy, add your HD to the list and remove it. Go to the root folder with cd / then run: sudo /Applications/omnidisk sweeper/contents/omnidisk sweeper (I can't remember the exact path) So here are all the possible things:Дisk inventory x and omnidisk sweeper: it can only find what is under your user permissions, to fully scan the entire disk you need to run from terminal.
